The Palais Idéal du Facteur Cheval

One day in April 1879, on the way back from one of his daily rounds, country postman Ferdinand Cheval, aged 43 at the time, stumbled upon a strange stone that reminded him of a dream that had sunk slowly into oblivion over the years : a fairytale palace beyond all imagination. Night after night he spent 33 years of his life modelling a monument with tenacity. Inspired by nature surrounding him, by illustrated magaines he delivered and also by postcards that began to appear in 1890, he built a palace like no other throughout the world.

Nowadays the Palais Idéal is considered a world reference in art brut and welcomes each year around 200 000 visitors. The palace was classed a historical monument in 1969 as a work of naive art. Ferdinand Cheval was a source of inspiration and tribute to numerous artists like André Breton, Pablo Picasso, Tinguely, Max Ernst, Niki de Saint-Phalle…
